Over the past few years, a third-grade teacher and I have worked on an Author Study with her class on William Steig. We would ask students to demonstrate their comprehension strategy use while they were partner reading 5-6 of his books. They would record questions they were asking, predictions they were making, and character traits they were inferring using evidence from the text to support their thinking. As a culminating activity, students would choose their favorite William Steig book and present a poster advertising the merits of that particular text. The poster's requirements include:
some biographical information on William Steig
a short summary (without giving the ending away) that "sells" the book
a character trait describing the main character using text evidence
interesting vocabulary featured in the book
appealing visuals
I chose this author study (Question #1) because students get so excited reading William Steig's books. They love his humor, his fascinating characters, his interesting vocabulary, and the accessible themes he presents in his stories. I think adding a technology component to their products will make them that much more excited about the entire project. I had a ball creating my glog for Brave Irene and I know the students will enjoy creating their own!
